Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment?

No appointments are necessary. Please visit us during store hours and we will be happy to help you find your perfect dress!

Be sure to allow enough time for your visit, as our dressing rooms close 15 minutes prior to closing time.

When is the best time to shop?

When shopping for Special Occasion dresses, you will want to start 4-5 months before the prom or wedding for the best selection. Of course, if you are short on time, don't worry, we can still help you.

Shopping during the week is quieter, and less crazy than Saturdays, or days off for school breaks. Earlier in the day is is better too!

How can I choose from so many beautiful dresses?

It's not a bad idea to look at a few pictures, and give some thought to what style and color you might want to wear to your event.

Our best advice is to keep your mind open, and allow us to help you, and make a few suggestions. We know our dresses, and how they look on a body. Many times we suggest dresses that you may never have picked out for yourself.

Can I take my dress home today?

We protect every dress in bags to keep each one in pristine condition.  So, YES, when you find your perfect dress you may take it home TODAY!

Our stock moves very quickly, so the dress you see today, may not be here when you come back for it tomorrow!

If necessary, we can try to special order a dress for you...but, come in today so we have  the best chance of securing a dress for you before it sells out!

How do gown sizes run?

Special Occasion dresses and gowns run 2 -3 sizes smaller than regular clothing. So, don't get hung up on a number, let's just find you the dress that looks the best on you. You can always cut out the size tag!

Little Black Dress Shop carries gowns from size 00 -26. Many of our dresses can be special ordered up to size 32. Plus sizes are not a problem!

Will my dress need alterations?

Special occasion Dresses almost always require alterations. You will want to shop sooner than later to be sure you have plenty of time for alterations.

We do not do alterations here, (that saves you money!) but will be glad to give you a list of alteration folks who we know do good work.

Do you register prom gowns?

Prom is a special event that you will remember the rest of your life. We want to help keep your prom look special, so we will only sell one style dress (same manufacturer & same style number) to each school.

We do this because our customers LOVE that we don't sell the same dress over and over again. But, it does mean that you should shop early so you can be sure that the perfect dress is on you, and not your friend!

Can you assure me of the best price for my dress?

Yes! If you find a lower price on a Prom or Mother of the Bride Gown from Little Black Dress Shop within 7 days of purchase from an authorized retailer, we’ll not only match it, we’ll BEAT it!

We will give you a Gift Certificate for 120% of the difference to use on any other items in the store!

Just notify us by email at within 7 days of the purchase date with the authorized competitor name, location and price details. Once the price and authority of the competitor is confirmed with the designer, you will be issued a Gift Certificate for 120% of the difference in the prices!

How can I pay for my dress?

We have many ways to pay for your dress. In addition to cash, we accept American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and  Visa.

If you are short on funds the day you find your perfect dress, Lay-a-way is available. We require 50% down, and the balance must be paid within 45 days. Price is set at time of lay-a-way and not subject to any further price reductions. There is no return or exchanges on lay-a-way purchases.

Do you accept returns?

We want you to love your dress, so please choose carefully. All special occasion purchases are FINAL SALES. There are no returns, refunds or exchanges.

Thank you to everyone for your interest and patience as we navigate our way through the current COVID environment. The Governor's restrictions regarding Proms and Weddings continue to create an environment that is unfavorable to the operation of specialty boutiques such as ours.

You may know that, just a the pandemic hit, we were beginning a large "everything must go" retirement sale. We're continuing down the retirement path and, to that end, have put our building up for sale.

We still have a large supply of Mother of the Bride and Prom gowns and are currently evaluating our options with regard to these items. One of the options under consideration, assuming we continue to see a lessening of the restrictions around large gathering, is a short term "pop up" store at, or near, one of our area malls. If we decide this option is a good fit for us, you will be able to realize HUGE savings as we sell off our remaining inventory.
